Hummingbird Day – Saturday July 28, 2018 9 Am – Noon

Hummingbird Day will be held at the Illinois Audubon Society War Bluff Valley Wildlife Sanctuary on Bushwack Road north of Golconda, Illinois.  Take Route 146 north 3.5 miles to Bushwack Road and turn left. Follow Bushwack Road about 2.2 miles to the sanctuary entrance on the right.  A light potluck luncheon will be held at 12:30 PM followed by the Shawnee Chapter Annual Meeting and elections.  Everyone is welcome!


In 10 days, on Saturday, August 26, the Shawnee Chapter of Illinois Audubon Society will host Insect Awareness and Appreciation Day

(IAAD) to celebrate Bugs!!! The fun will begin at 3:30pm and take place at beautiful War Bluff Wildlife Sanctuary (228 Bushwack Road) 3.5 mi north of Golconda on Rt. 146, left onto Bushwack Road 2.3 mi.

IAAD will feature afternoon “Aquatic Adventures” with SIU Freshwater Ecologists, Sophia Bonjour, Jared Bilak, Kasey Fralick and Katie Heiden. They will be exploring pond and stream habitats to look for the insects that live there. Join them to learn about these underwater critters and how they make their living.

Following the afternoon activities, guests are welcome to join Shawnee Audubon members for a delicious potluck dinner. Shawnee Audubon will provide the meat and vegetarian entrées. Please bring a side dish to share.

The “Really Cool Raffle” will follow dinner and feature really cool stuff including many kid friendly insect related items. Insect posters and booklets (Wings, Things, and Stingy Things) will be given away before dinner.
